How to Finish and Hang Crochet Christmas Ornaments
Thoughtful finishing can make a small crochet ornament easier to hang, store and enjoy. These general techniques work alongside the assembly instructions in your specific crochet pattern.
Arrange the pieces before sewing
Lay out all the crocheted components on a flat surface and check that they match the pattern parts list. Compare orientation and symmetry before attaching decorative details.
For shapes with a front and back, identify the right side and joining edges. This is particularly useful for tiny stockings, stars, animals and angels.
Weave in yarn ends securely
Thread each yarn tail through a yarn needle. Run it through the stitches on the wrong side of the fabric, changing direction where appropriate to help keep it secure.
Trim the tail only after the end is secure. Avoid relying on a single short knot for an ornament that may be handled repeatedly each holiday season.
Position the hanging loop
Find the ornament’s balance point before attaching the loop permanently. A loop too far to one side can make a stocking, star or reindeer hang at an angle.
Use the loop material suggested by the pattern when available. Check the final length and strength before hanging the item on a tree or gift.
Final shape and storage
Gently reshape the piece by hand. Only use blocking, steam or washing methods suitable for the chosen yarn and any attached decorations.
Store dry ornaments in a cool, clean place between seasons. Keep delicate embellishments from getting crushed and avoid moisture during storage.
